Let There Be Peace on Earth

Helen at This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time started a new prompt today entitled Song Lyric Sunday. It gives participants a chance to share the lyrics and tune to a favorite song. The song that came to my mind was “Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let it Begin with Me.” It was one I loved in my early years but haven’t thought of for decades.

The song was written by Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller in 1955. The lyrics are:

Let There Be Peace on Earth and let it begin with me.
Let There Be Peace on Earth, the peace that was meant to be!
With God as our Father, brothers all are we.
Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me. Let this be the moment now.
With ev’ry breath I take, let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally!
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me!

When I looked for a video to post with the lyrics, I was drawn to one by the Harlem Boys’ Choir. The song touched me as much as it did fifty years ago. I imagine it will bring back memories to some of you as well. And it is certainly a message that the world needs to hear at this point in time.

    1. I don’t remember ever singing it in that part of my life but it does make sense. It is a good song for that setting.

      Thinking about the song has made me remember the time when they started rewording hymns and other songs to make them inclusive. It seemed really strange at that point and unnecessary. But now it seems really weird to hear only the masculine word, i.e. brother, and realize that was the way all of the songs used to be.

  3. I grew up singing this song in church, but though I’m no longer religious in that sense, I do appreciate this song for its beauty and for its message. You’re right; it has great meaning today where we could use more peace and less fighting.

    1. I didn’t remember that it was a church song, but that would make sense for that part of my life. I remember that one as an around the campfire song. But some of the groups I would have done that with were church groups.

      As I’m thinking of songs for future posts I find that they are really taking me through a tour of my life. A lot of the childhood ones are church songs.

      1. I haven’t created a hashtag, but perhaps I should. I believe you can search by Song Lyric Sunday. I use that in all of my titles and I tag all of my posts with it.

        I started about a year ago, but it’s finally catching on and I love it. I love sharing music and seeing the different music people listen to. I’m looking forward to many more great Sundays!
