The Black Doves Came To Me!

black_peace_dove-svgI just had the most amazing dream. It was filled with so many snipets. Some were joyful and some were uncomfortable. Some could have happened in the present or might happen in the future, but others brought in elements of the past. One snipet felt mystical, like being in a magical kingdom.

When the dream started, I was at one of Amma’s programs. Towards the end of the program, I had to leave the hall briefly. I found myself in the middle of the college campus where I received my Bachelor of Nursing degree. Amma’s program was taking place in another part of that campus. Later, in my waking state, I concluded that could never happen since the school is a conservative Christian college, but hey, it was a dream and I didn’t question it at the time.

When I was ready to go back to the program hall, I could hear the closing songs of Amma’s program in the distance. If I didn’t hurry I was going to miss the end of the program, a part I treasure. However, it had been so long since I had been on the campus that I didn’t know what direction to go.

As I was trying to figure out what to do, a large shadow fell over me. When I looked up, I saw an incredible sight. There were two enormous black doves soaring through the sky like the eagles I watch in India. The birds were soaring side by side with the right wing of one of them overlapping the left wing of the other. They were like a couple doing an exquisite dance. When I wondered how big the two birds actually were, 60 feet was the number that came into my mind… 60 feet from the left tip of one bird’s wing to the right tip of the other’s.

Viewing this dance was awe-inspiring. In fact, I felt pure joy… and peace… as I watched them glide through the air. At one point they came so low that I ended up laying down on the ground to watch them. I had something in my hand although I don’t remember what it was. The two doves came even closer to me. One of them took the object…with it’s wing I think, looked at it and then gave it back to me. Afterwards they continued on their beautiful flight, and my dream changed to another snipet.

When I woke up a few minutes later, I knew my sleep was over for the night. I was filled with the glory of my experience with the black doves. Even though I had missed the ending of Amma’s program, I knew I had been given an ending that I would never forget.

Soon after I left my bed, I decided to see what the black dove symbolized in Native American medicine. The first article that caught my eye turned out to be from a blog named Shamanism.

Some excerpts from that post.

Dove/Pigeon’s gifts include – bringer of peace and love, understanding of gentleness, spirit messenger, communication between the two worlds, maternity, femininity, prophecy.

The Dove represents peace of the deepest kind. It soothes and quiets our worried and troubled thoughts, and enables us to find renewal in the silence of mind.

The dove embodies maternal instinct and is connected to Mother Earth and her creative energies.

If dove flies into your life, you are being asked to go within and release your emotional disharmony, be it of the past or the present.

Doves carry the energy of promise. When inner agitation is banished from our thoughts, words and feelings, the goodness awaits us.

Every word in the Dove Pigeon Power Animal post spoke to me. I was amazed at how many of the themes that are active in my life now it incorporated. I thought about the My Life is in Transition post I wrote a week ago.

Now that I am awake, my mind is telling me “Those weren’t doves.” “Doves don’t soar like that.” “Doves don’t look like that.” But in the dream I had no doubt that they were doves. And the shamanic information about the doves fits completely.

So I choose peace of mind. Two doves visited me in my dreams last night and gave me an incredible gift as they danced their dance of peace.

  1. What a wonderful gift of peace. I like the interpretations especially this one:
“…It soothes and quiets our worried and troubled thoughts, and enables us to find renewal in the silence of mind…”
