It doesn’t have to be a physical forest and in the modern world it usually isn’t. Almost all myths about spiritual journeys include periods of retreat and episodes of what we might call madness.

That’s true although in this case I’ve been interpreting it as slowing and letting go of the obsessive mind as opposed to going into madness. I remember many years ago my teacher saying that we are 95% mind and we are meant to be 5%.
