I frequently think of an incident that happened when I was teaching my daughter to drive. It was one of those, “I can’t believe that came out of my mouth” moments.
To begin with, I should say that teaching my kids to drive was one of the most frightening experiences I’ve ever had. More than likely that was due to the fact that the first time my father took me out for a driving lesson, I turned a corner too sharply and drove into the back of a parked car! That was the first and last lesson I received from my father.
I remember my son arriving home after his first solo drive. He commented that it was so nice to be able to drive without someone sitting next to him gasping and stomping down on nonexistent brakes.
My memorable moment with my daughter occurred when we were coming home from a practice drive. We were about a block away from the house when I said “At the next street, turn right!” She looked at me, probably rolling her eyes, and said “MOM! I have lived here my entire life. I know to turn right at the next street!”
What can I say. …… I’m a mother. Mothers are like that!

Ah, ya gotta love Moms! you were quite brave to teach them. I could not teach my kids…I knew I was a basket case and too naggy, so they took lessons and drove with their dad. My mom taught me and my ex. She was so calm and trusting!! so unlike her natural worried type of personality. Go figure!

I think I enlisted someone else to be the primary teacher for one or both of them. It was too stressful for me too!

I heard there was going to be a full moon on that day, but I didn’t see it. I think it would have been too cloudy here to see it, even if I had looked.

I heard on the news it will be in 2049. I just looked it up and two reports said that date and another said 2098. Regardless, it is a long time!

My mom was also like that in the beginning. I don’t blame her, though, not being in control of the car must be terrifying when you’re worried about your kid. I’ll probably do exactly the same when it’s my turn, hehe.

I used to get nervous when anyone other than me drove. People in general drive more aggressively than I do. I’m finding myself getting more relaxed as the years go by though.

Reblogged this on Ms Toy Whisperer and commented:
My “I cannot believe it came our of my mouth moment” was also in the car. I was with my two teenage daughters when the eldest from the seat asked me to ‘turn on the radio’. As I reached for the dial, I said in my deepest sexiest voice, “Hello, Mr. Radio. How are you today?” They yelled “Mom!!” in unison and then died laughing. I haven’t lived it down yet. Not a ‘proud Mom moment’ for me.

Thanks for sharing your story.
It reminded me when I first got my driver’s license, my mom lets me drive our car to work so I can practice. (Yup, she drives me to work everyday when I didn’t have my license yet).
She would tell me when to hit the break, slowly maneuver the steering wheel, and told me not to drive too fast. When we reached a rotunda (round-about), she startled me by saying “there’s a car. There’s a car. stop!”…. I just had it… i shushed her. I told her, if she doesn’t stop, she should drive the car. She fell silent afterwards… LOL!
Thanks for the wonderful memory.. 🙂
